Acquaintance Party, Raffle Draw held
taken from PURGED! (November 1999)
Party! Party! Party!
About 50-people-strong members of the UP Academic League of Chemical
Engineering Students (UP ALCHEMES) held their first-ever Acquaintance Party
last September 26, 1999 from 4-7 PM at the National Engineering Center (NEC)
Lounge. This activity also marked the first significant gathering of UP
ALCHEMES officers and members after being officially recognized as an
academic organization by the College of Engineering about a week earlier.
Also present during the party were the advisers of UP ALCHEMES: Prof.
Florencio Ballesteros, and Mr. Jong Vasquez.
In his brief speech, Prof. Ballesteros said that he hopes members of the UP
ALCHEMES will uphold the academic pursuits and ideals as the organization's
main reason for being. He also added that he hopes that UP ALCHEMES will
develop not only academic proficiency in the field of Chemical Engineering,
but also interpersonal and social skills among its members.
For his part, Mr. Vasquez remarked that he is glad that such an organization
was put up, thereby giving students in the Chemical Engineering Department
an option to which group they would like to be identified with. The only
other existing organization in the said department for the longest time is
the UP Chemical Engineering Society (UP KEM).
Games, surprises, etc.
The Acquaintance Party also became a showcase of a history lesson, a couple
of presentations, riotous games, and prizes galore.
Olga Estil, Executive Officer for Internal Affairs and Master of Ceremonies
that night, at the start of the program, gave a quick albeit funny and
inspiring glimpse of how UP ALCHEMES came to be. What started off as a
teacher's casual and unserious remark is now a promising academic
organization.
Afterwards, UP ALCHEMES President Teofilo Garcia, Jr., and a self-appointed
editor of this newsletter gave a soulful(?) rendition of Boyzone's "You
Needed Me". Third Year gals from Molave scored a plus by dancing to the
tune of a Janet Jackson dance hit. And Ronald de Castro along with three gal
vocalists showed musical prowess by doing a medley of sentimental love
songs.
The games proved to be hilarious. There was a "Polo-on-Toothpicks relay
race" that had so many mishaps during the actual game. On the other
hand, there was the "touchy" sport "Kapaan ng Kutsara",
for which the team of Executive Officer for Finance Flor Cabalteja got the
top prize.
The Acquaintance Party was also the event for the drawing of winners for the
UP ALCHEMES Giordano Bag Raffle. Winner of a consolation prize of Kermit the
Frog Mug was Cherryl Mamaril. The seller of the ticket of the consolation
prize winner, Rowie Carpio, was also the lucky winner of the top prize.
